French organist and composer Louis Vierne studied with Franck and Widor at the Paris Conservatoire. He was the organist at Notre Dame in Paris and professor at the Schola Cantorum. According to A New Dictionary of Music (Arthur Jacobs), Vierne was “blind from birth.” The pieces were originally composed for viola and piano.
