Richard Strauss is well known for his symphonic poems and operas. The Cello Sonata (1883) is dedicated “to my dear friend Hanus Wihan,” a prominent Czech cello virtuoso.
On the first manuscript Strauss added a verse by the Austrian poet Franz Grillparzer as follows:
