French pianist and composer Erik Satie became a pupil of Rousell and d’Indy at the age of 39. He influenced younger composers (The Six) towards a cool, clear style and away from the lushness sometimes associated Impressionism. Also, he began to write harmonically advanced pieces for piano that anticipated effects of Debussy and Ravel.
