David Popper (1843-1913) has written many short pieces for cello as well as four concerti. He was a pupil of Johann Goltermann (1825-1876) at the PragueConservatory. From 1868-73 Popper was the first cellist of the Vienna Court Orchestra. After 1896 he taught at the National Academy of Music in Budapest.
The Gavotte was introduced to this editor by one of his teachers, Dmitry Shmuklovsky.
