French composer and organist Theodore Dubois won the Prix de Rome in 1861 as a pupil of Ambroise Thomas at the Paris Conservatoire. He served as director of the Conservatoire from 1896 - 1905. Dubois wrote operas, church music, orchestra works, etc. The Cavatine was originally for Cello and Piano.
