Frederick Delius was born in England in 1862 and died in France in 1934.
The Sonata was composed in 1916 and first performed in 1918 by English cellist Beatrice Harrison to whom it was dedicated. This Sonata may have influenced parts of
Elgar's Cello Concerto of 1919. Sir. Thomas Beecham was an enthusiastic advocate of the music of Delius.
