The Norwegian violinist and composer Ole Bull was among the most celebrated musicians of the nineteenth century, a star who toured most ofthe world and was often nicknamed “The Paganini ofthe North.” He was a larger-than-life figure.
Two of his most popular violin pieces: La Melancolie (1850) / “I ensomme stunde” / “In Moments of Solitude” / “In Lonely Moments”, and Solitude on the Mountain / “Pa Solen jeg ser” / “Saeterjentens sondag”, he played in 1876 (66 years old) on the top of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt! Ole Bull may have had both tunes in his mind, or have been inspired by local folk music fiddlers. He included the melodies together with Norwegian folk songs and a folk dance. Ole Bull gave it.the name “Et Saeterbesok / A Mountain Vision.” It was first performed in 1850 and was an important part of a major nationalistic concert in 1851 in Kristiania (now Oslo). His last concert was in Chicago 1880, the same year he died in Bergen, Norway. I have organized the bass part to follow the melodic lines in both pieces.
